BMW will eliminate about 8,000 jobs — roughly 5% of its workforce — by the end of 2027, primarily in Germany, through a voluntary severance program already agreed with employee representatives.
The BMW Group employed 154,540 people at the end of 2025, the baseline against which the roughly 8,000 cuts represent about a 5% reduction.
The announcement ends BMW's status as an outlier: while rival automakers had already unveiled drastic cost-cutting measures, BMW had until now avoided the need to tighten its belt.
