On June 20, 2026, an unoccupied robotaxi from Amazon-owned Zoox drove into heavy smoke at a Las Vegas-area fire scene that had not yet been cordoned off with traffic cones, according to a person familiar with the matter (the official report did not disclose the location).
After entering the smoke-obscured scene, the vehicle braked hard, and Zoox subsequently discovered a related software issue affecting its detection of such conditions.
Zoox submitted a recall report to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on Thursday, stating the software issue could potentially affect about 100 of its vehicles.
