Researchers Shuyao Shang, Yuqi Wang, Ruopeng Gao, Xu Chen, Tieniu Tan, Lue Fan and Zhaoxiang Zhang introduce PhiZero (arXiv:2607.28624, posted July 30, 2026), a physical world model built around "physical language," a compact discrete representation of world-state transitions.
The team contrasts PhiZero with existing physical world models, which typically predict future video directly in pixel space and leave world dynamics implicit inside high-dimensional visual predictors; PhiZero instead makes state transitions explicit, drawing on humans' ability to abstract predictive structure from visual experience into language for reasoning.
World models that render physical dynamics explicit and discrete are directly relevant to autonomous driving, where interpretable, generalizable prediction of how a scene will evolve underpins trajectory planning and collision-avoidance decisions.
