Hyundai and SK On opened their $5 billion, 50/50 joint-venture battery plant, Hyundai-SK Battery Manufacturing America, in Bartow County, Georgia, with capacity to power about 300,000 EVs a year, with initial output supplying the three-row IONIQ 9.
The plant was first announced in late 2022 as part of Hyundai's $12.6 billion Metaplant America (HMGMA) — Georgia's largest economic project in state history — with joint-venture terms finalized and construction officially announced in April 2023; production has now begun, later than the original second-half-2025 target.
The facility gives Hyundai Motor Group, including Kia and Genesis, localized North American battery supply for their EV lineups, cutting import dependency as the group scales up EV production.
