Automakers had fitted vehicles with a "smart-driving blue light" that flashes when advanced driver-assistance (ADAS) features are engaged, visually signaling to onlookers that the car is running in autonomous/assisted-driving mode.
Regulators banned the indicator because blue is not an approved exterior vehicle-light color under national standards, and it can be confused with other road signals and mislead surrounding drivers about the car's actual automation level; the move also targets automakers that have overstated their ADAS capabilities in marketing.
The ban signals broader regulatory tightening on how Chinese automakers market self-driving features, pushing the industry away from "tech-gimmick" showmanship toward safety and truthful capability claims.
