NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a preliminary evaluation on Jul 31, 2026 into roughly 1.2 million Tesla vehicles — 2018-2020 Model 3 and 2021-2023 Model Y — after receiving 156 complaints of a front suspension component detaching while driving.
The complaints center on the front lower lateral link separating from the vehicle.
The preliminary evaluation is the first stage of NHTSA's investigative process; if ODI identifies a safety-related defect, the probe can escalate to an engineering analysis, a step that often precedes a recall.
