Uber announced a partnership to invest up to $12.5 billion in Rivian by 2031, funding deployment of up to 50,000 fully autonomous R2 robotaxis that will operate exclusively on Uber's platform.
The first 10,000 R2 robotaxis launch in San Francisco and Miami in 2028, then expand to roughly 25 cities across the U.S., Canada, and Europe by 2031, with production based at Rivian's Normal, Illinois plant and a second Georgia plant under construction to add capacity.
Rivian's autonomy roadmap runs in three stages: point-to-point assisted driving by end-2026, an L3 eyes-off highway transitional stage called "Autonomy+" around 2027, and L4 robotaxi service launch in 2028, with the robotaxi R2 adding extra cameras, more radar, possible lidar, and redundant steering/braking systems.
