Amazon's autonomous vehicle unit Zoox has completed a software update across its entire U.S. fleet of 105 robotaxis, following a voluntary safety recall.
The recall was triggered by a June 20, 2026 incident in which an unoccupied Zoox vehicle drove into an active fire scene obscured by dense smoke, before emergency crews had placed cones or barriers to cordon off the area.
The vehicle's sensor suite and driving algorithms failed to detect the smoke hazard, causing it to brake abruptly inside the emergency zone and risk obstructing responders — underscoring a broader challenge for AV perception systems in disaster and emergency scenes.
