NHTSA has named an internal Tesla document titled "Radar Saves Us" in a federal information request, a title that itself signals what the document likely argues.
Per commentary from Fred Lambert on X, the document almost certainly contains Tesla's own analysis that radar, or radar fused with vision, detects hazards — such as glare, fog, and dust that wash out cameras — that a camera-only system misses, a failure mode said to match nine crashes under scrutiny.
If so, the document could show Tesla internally recognized a safety gap in its camera-only design and knew of a fix, yet still shipped the camera-only system — a fact pattern bearing on whether the company's vision-only Autopilot/FSD approach faces stricter safety findings.
