Waymo recalled its fleet of nearly 4,000 robotaxis on June 18, 2026, restricting them from highway operations after identifying 13 incidents where vehicles drove into closed highway construction zones between April and May 2026.
The incidents occurred in Phoenix (6 cases in April) and San Francisco (7 cases in May), leading Waymo to voluntarily restrict freeway operations starting May 19 and file a software recall with NHTSA; the company is still operating on surface streets while developing a fix.
This is Waymo's sixth recall, following earlier incidents involving flooded roads and school bus behavior; the company proactively notified state and federal regulators of the issue.
