China imported 200,000 vehicles in H1 2026, down 11% year-on-year according to CPCA data released Sunday, while retail sales of imported cars fell more sharply, down 29% year-on-year to 190,000 units.
The narrower H1 decline mainly reflects a low comparison base from late 2025 rather than a genuine recovery, coming after a 32% plunge to 480,000 units for full-year 2025 and a 12% drop to 700,000 units in 2024, versus a 2014 peak of 1.43 million imports.
Japan and Germany held steady as import sources, while new-energy vehicles slipped to just 2% of imports as gasoline models regained dominance, marking a structural shift in China's import mix.
