In his first major interview as Porsche CEO, Michael Leiters confirmed the electric 718 model will still be built, ending months of speculation that it could be scrapped, though he showed signs of being less than fully committed to electrification.
Porsche was among the first automakers to launch a fully electric model under a standard model name rather than a separate "e" or "i" sub-brand, referring to the Taycan, and its two best-selling models, the Macan and Cayenne, are now both available as BEVs and selling well.
Despite these EV successes, Porsche — like other German automakers — has had a complicated, back-and-forth history with electrification and has been slower to electrify some of its other models.
