Honda's Toshihiro Mibe and then-Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida announced a basic merger agreement via holding company on Dec 23, 2024, with Mitsubishi Motors' Takao Kato signing a memorandum to consider joining, but the deal was scrapped just two months later in Feb 2025.
Multiple Japanese media now report the two automakers have decided to jointly develop a next-generation vehicle OS based on Nissan's existing platform, and plan to formally agree in August on unifying the core ECU (electronic control unit) that governs overall vehicle control.
The shift from full management integration to a pragmatic separation of competitive and cooperative domains reveals that SDV OS and ECU have become key collaboration areas, despite the failed merger attempt.
