Uber has partnered with, and in some cases directly invested in, more than 30 autonomous vehicle companies over the past two years, pursuing a global expansion strategy, according to a TechCrunch tracker published August 1, 2026.
Uber previously built its own in-house AV technology: under then-CEO Travis Kalanick, the company founded Uber Advanced Technologies Group (ATG) in 2014 and recruited dozens of researchers to develop and test self-driving systems.
The shift from proprietary AV development to a broad network of external partnerships reflects a wider industry pattern in which mobility and automotive players increasingly rely on multi-partner ecosystems rather than solo R&D to scale autonomous driving.
