NHTSA officially granted a petition requesting a federal mandate for clearer, more reliable door-release systems in all new vehicles, Bloomberg reported, formally launching a rulemaking process after multiple incidents in which occupants were trapped after vehicles lost electrical power during crashes.
Michael Brooks, executive director of the Center for Auto Safety, called the rulemaking launch a significant first step toward creating or modifying Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards covering electric doors and egress, while cautioning that a final compliance deadline for automakers likely won't arrive before 2030 even with a swift process.
The rule could force changes to Tesla's current flush exterior door handles, which rely on power from the vehicle's low-voltage battery — the design at the center of concerns about egress when power is lost.
